     Sleep is somewhat a mystery. Many people have studied sleep patterns, brain activity during sleep, and body functions, but nobody is quite sure what exactly happens when we close our eyes and drift away into the dream world.
     We spend on average the third of our lives asleep. Sleeping is even more important than eating. For comparison – the world Guinness record for the longest time without sleeping is 11 days. Without eating – Scottish man Angus Barbieri fasted for 382 days. He lived on tea, coffee, soda water, and vitamins. The difference is huge! Going without sleep for more than a few days can cause hallucinations, weight gain, a weakened immune system, reduced pain tolerance, and even death.
     It is important not to underestimate the importance of good sleep. And if you have trouble getting asleep, breathing exercises can be a wonderful help to prepare your mind and body for rest.
